Özet

Collectively, Southeast Asia’s countries constitute one of the world’s largest concentrations of migrant workers, thus increasing the importance of considering their rights, especially given that they have been one of the groups most seriously affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a rights-based perspective, this chapter first examines migration trends and the position of migrant workers in Southeast Asia, and subsequently the policies taken by their host countries and how migrants are regulated by individual states. It then discusses a human rights-based approach towards migrants in Southeast Asia before briefly providing a general overview of the impact of COVID-19. In conclusion, it reminds readers of how rights-based migration governance is important and of common interest to society during such crises, while also empowering migrants to know and assert their rights as well as increase their visibility.
